Dancing to the Bosko Beat

Wow, I meant to post this thing like two or three months ago, but I guess I got busy and forgot. I had it posted on my vimeo channel, but I never got around to blogging about it.

This thing, would be the first lesson on animation from the John K Stuff blog. He talks about animating a simple character on musical beats as the fastest way to learn how to animate. So he then shows a clip of Bosko, from the 30's and it's simple enough to figure out. I went a little further, and got a couple more seconds of footage animated. This was also my first and only attempt at traditional animation with pencil and paper on my homemade light table (actually it turned out really good for only $15).

Now tell me what you think, hopefully I can get back to doing this more, it's sweet to flip through the animation and see it move before my eyes. Some nostalgic feeling that computer programs have never giving me, it just feels more real.

Top Cat Toy Construction

Here are my Top Cat Construction drawings. This one was a challenge, and the fact that I have been in between houses and living on friends couches didn't help. Now that I have a semi-permanent living area I can start going through some lessons.

The best part about this was watching how the eyes move around at different angles, something that I don't feel that confident when drawing cartoons.

Porky Poses - Lesson 7 (Again)

Holy cow, drawing up my own poses is super fun. When I copy someone else's drawing, the funnest part is looking a pretty looking finished drawing, but when I make up my own the the whole process is fun (although more difficult and time consuming). At first I started scribbling some poses with a pen,
(you can check out the scribbles in this post) to get the good line of action, good proportions and a generally pleasing figure. Then I roughed out the proportions, bigger this time, and tried to iron out anything that was bugging me. Lastly I went over it in red and laid down the details. Cool huh!

Guess what director I was thinking about when I scribbled this one

Lesson 7 With P-P-Porky

Here is my Lesson 7 "When Generic Is A Good Thing", and seeing as how I've already studied Tom and Jerry, I wanted to draw some Warner Bros. I found some Porky pics on the internet to study for the first couple, and then I grabbed a bunch of screenshots from my copy of "Kitty Kornered," by Bob Clampett. Those were a lot of fun, especially since that is one of my favorite episodes, and one of my favorite directors. In the middle of this lesson, life got in the way and I had to postpone my lessons, but now I'mmmm bbbbaaaack.

Here was the long break from the lessons, but I think they are getting better than ever.

And here are all of the attempts

Tell me what you think, and I'd love to hear some critiques. The worst part about training your eye to see all of the little details, is my drawings are starting to look worse and worse to me (especially when put next to the original). But on their own the are starting to look pretty decent.
